1918
KNZ starts Salt Exploitation
in Boekelo
Driven by WWI salt shortages, the founding of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Zoutindustrie (KNZ) and its Boekelo mine secured a critical domestic salt supply, marking the birth of the modern Dutch salt industry.
1929
Introduction of the JOZO Brand
The iconic JOZO brand was launched, its name from "JOdium" and "ZOut," marketing iodized salt as a public health solution and becoming a Dutch household staple.
1933
Relocation to Hengelo
The new Twente Canal enabled a strategic move to Hengelo. This riverside location provided efficient waterway access for transporting heavy bulk salt.
1959
Salt Production in Delfzijl
A new plant opened in Delfzijl using solution mining. Its coastal location strategically served the chemical industry and facilitated export by sea.
1960
Joint Venture in Denmark (Mariager)
Akzo (which included Koninklijke Nederlandse Zoutindustrie) partnered with Denmark's Kryolit to form Mariager Salt Specialties. This JV exploited a Danish salt dome, establishing a strategic foothold for producing industrial salts in Scandinavia.
1960s
Pharma Salt in Stade
Production of pharmaceutical-grade salt commenced at the facility in Stade, Germany, marking an early strategic move into high-value specialty products.
2003
Start Pharma Salt in Mariager
Mariager began producing high-purity pharmaceutical salt, a critical shift into a specialized, high-value market. This required advanced technology and strict quality control to meet pharmacopoeia standards.
2017
Expansion in Mariager
A major expansion of pharma salt production capacity cemented Mariager's role as a world-leading specialist. This investment responded to global demand and focused its strategy on high-value products.
2021
Acquisition by Group Salins
French-based Group Salins, a major European salt producer, acquired Mariager Salt Specialties. This move added elite pharma salt capabilities to its portfolio and provided Mariager with a salt-focused parent for future growth.
